FACEBOOK CENSORSHIP & STORMS WON’T STOP US, ORGANISERS SAY
The highly anticipated Free Cannabis picnic in Sydney has been delayed but not stopped with the event postponed by one week due to freak storms to hit the city over the past few days.
While making a decision on the wild weather, organisers were also putting out fires elsewhere after Facebook decided to delete an event page for the picnic that had gathered close to 5,000 followers only four days out from the event.
After lobbying by PR 4 THE PEOPLE on behalf of Free Cannabis NSW, Facebook eventually re-instated the original page early on the day of Sunday, June 5. It was revealed that the decision to take down the event page was a “human mistake” after Facebook received one single complaint. [UPDATE: On June 7, Facebook once again unpublished the picnic event page as well as the Free Cannabis NSW organisation page, both of which remain down while the decision is being appealed. The page was finally returned to normal on June 9 after a successful appeal]
Organisers expect up to 1,000 people or more to come down to Camperdown’s Victoria Park with a promise that this picnic will be the best one yet.
A number of bands are so eager to play at the latest picnic that they’re all pitching in with their time and creativity for free. The low-key sets will include a bunch of things we have managed to scrabble together so you can hear some psychedelic music live in a park on a Sunday.
Comedians, including Darren Hunter aka The Lazy Anarcho-Unionist, and Steve Stonerson, will try and get the crowds to laugh in between the music, although that shouldn’t be too difficult to do.
Stoner food will be provided on the day for those with the munchies, with local Newtown cafe D’Munchies cooking up burgers, donuts and other stoner treats for the hungry.
The event has the official support of the NSW Greens, Drug Law Reform Party and Liberal Democrats party.
