PR 4 THE PPL was tasked by cannabis advocacy organisation Free Cannabis NSW in early 2016 to increase public awareness of its second ever Free Cannabis picnic held in Sydney after the group had organised an inaugural event in January which drew about 100 people.
With our help, the picnic drew more than double the numbers and also received widespread positive coverage across major media outlets with the Sunday Telegraph, News.com.au, Daily Mail, The Huffington Post, Yahoo7, Pedestrian.tv and the Sydney Criminal Lawyers website all publicising the event.
A video shot and edited by PR 4 THE PPL and broadcast online after the picnic also quickly went viral on Facebook, clocking up tens of thousands of views within a few days.
We also believe our publicity had an effect on police and government, who chose not to arrest or charge anybody at the event. A third picnic organised in June saw our biggest turnout with just under 500 people attending as well as a bunch of bands and stand-up comedians and food from local Newtown stoner restaurant D’Munchies.
PR 4 THE PPL has since helped successfully plan and organise other cannabis picnic events in Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide with musicians, comedians and celebrities attending. Our efforts have seen major television networks such as Network Seven cover the events for their nightly news shows.
Free Cannabis NSW organiser, Chris Hindi, said the movement to “destigmatise” cannabis use was only going to keep growing with the cannabis picnics set to be a regular event held every couple of months.
“Everyone who came loved the atmosphere and had a great time with many saying not only will they be back but they will be bringing more friends along,” he said.
“We are not going away until we have serious reforms on cannabis, including legalisation, and an end to the criminalisation of users.”
